How to Revive Your Writing Mindset When the Passion Seems to Have Gone

How to Revive Your Writing Mindset When the Passion Seems to Have Gone

Remember Why You Write

A writer starts building a career in their craft from love. You loved something about writing so much that you decided to dedicate a piece of your life to the organization of words and creation of worlds.

Yet if you have been a writer for long, you know all too well that the love you began with is easily lost in the drudgery and aloneness of the life. Sometimes it’s hard to remember just why you started, only that you cannot stop.

You go through the motions of writing, yet every day it gets harder to breath life into the words. Soon writing is something forced from you, not released through passion.

Blocks are a reality of a writing life, and on those days we writers do need to push through and write even when we don’t feel like it. But if your writing life is defined by this struggle, perhaps it’s more than a momentary block to work through and more a mindset you need to redefine.

Because I’ve struggled to correct this writing mindset for a while now, I’ve developed a simple strategy I can combat it with.

In this article we will be talking about the fallacy we believe against the reality of why we write, and the simple implement I use to correct-course my mindset on those especially draining days.

If you have related to anything written above, than strap in and let’s start fixing our writing mindsets for a healthier and happier writing life.

Fallacy vs. Reality

When your writing mindset is predominated not by your love of writing but the feeling of being forced to write, than any free, beautiful passion you hold will be stifled from showing on the page.

Instead of empowering you, the mind can weigh so heavily until you are ground into the earth.

But this isn’t the reality of your love for writing—it is a fallacy your mind is convincing you to believe: that you do not want to write, but are being forced to write.

The reality is the thing you loved so much about writing that got you started.

For example, my reality of writing is the gift of connecting with you, sharing the stories that blossom in my soul, and spreading encouragement to everyone fighting the battle of life.

Whatever your reality of writing is, your mind is working against you by presenting a dark fallacy to block out your light.

So, how can we overcome this thought pattern?

It’s Your Decision

My current writing mindset makes me feel forced to write until it’s all I feel—the pressure. So what’s the opposite of being forced to do something?

Deciding to do something.

How I counter my bad thought pattern is I make writing a decision again. I get to decide if I write today. What I’ve found is when I make the decision I remember why I made writing such a priority in my life, and it’s then when I’m brought back to the reality of why I write.

Giving yourself the freedom to choose to write today or not, gives you the space to see reality with clarity—to remember you love writing.

It doesn’t make the writing project easier, but it makes the starting easier and breathes passion into your words again.

Writing sentences which come alive requires a habitual return to the reasons why we write. It’s remembering we want to write, not that we our forced against our will to.

And it’s remembering how writing is part of the core of who we are as writers.

The Power of Freedom

Our minds can send us messages that aren’t true. These false messages can cloud our vision with bad feelings and fear. A major part of the writing life is finding ways to overcome the lies and find the truth.

You can’t banish lies from entering your mind, but that is okay. If you traveled through writing without any trouble than you wouldn’t be human.

Your job is to recognize the lies when they come, and to find a way to overcome them.

If you are reading this article, then I know you are strong and determined enough to work through your bad mindsets. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t have put in the time to read these words.

There is power in freedom—in making decisions. Give yourself that freedom.
